Driving Tips for Tunisia
Essential guide for tourists and travelers renting a car in Tunisia
Drive on the right
Tunisia drives on the right side, like continental Europe. Road signs are in Arabic and French.
Speed limits
50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on national roads, 110 km/h on highways. Speed cameras are common.
Toll highways
The A1 (Tunis-Sfax) and A3 highways have tolls. Keep some change handy.
Fuel
Gas stations are common in cities and main roads. Less frequent in the south. Unleaded and diesel available.
Night driving
Avoid driving at night outside cities. Street lighting is limited and pedestrians/animals may appear.
Roundabouts
Priority goes to vehicles already in the roundabout. Be cautious as this rule is not always followed.
Parking
In cities, informal parking attendants guide you. A tip of 0.5-1 TND is customary.
Alcohol: zero tolerance
The legal blood alcohol limit is 0 g/l. Do not drink and drive.
Seatbelts
Mandatory for driver and all passengers. Child seats required for young children.
Phone use
Prohibited while driving. Use hands-free or wait until you stop to make calls.
Documents to carry
Always carry: driving license, rental contract, insurance green card.
